We caught up with Contact Packing Administrator Simon Millar about his recent SVQ course. Simon has worked with Russell since November 2020 and recently achieved the SCQF Level 6 qualification.
What attracted you to this training opportunity?
I took the SVQ 3 Business and Administration SCQF Level 6. I was attracted to the qualification originally because it was going to give me a broader knowledge of business and the day-to-day tasks that will need to be performed to keep a business operational.
What did the qualification involve?
The qualification involved different units for example how to use spreadsheets, how to communicate correctly using the correct methods and planning how to manage and improve my own performance in the business environment. There were many other units that also had to be completed.
How has the course helped you in your current role?
The course has helped me understand the protocols and procedures needed within the workplace especially as so many need to be followed around the site. It also helps magnetify the importance of these when in such a large site with heavy machinery and laws having to be followed around the storage of specific goods.
How do you think the qualification will benefit you in future?
The skills that I have learned have helped me learn what skills are needed to have a successful business and deal with the challenges that can come up at very short notice. Being able to adapt is pivotal to making the business/department perform as well as possible and really fulfil the potential.
Would you recommend this course to others? Why?
Yes, I would recommend this course and SVQ’s in general. It gave me a good understanding of how day to day actions can affect how a business could and should be run. It can give you the knowledge you need to really push on and enhance your career right from the beginning.
In 5 years’ time, what do you see yourself doing career wise?
In the near future, I hope to progress through the company and continue to improve as much as possible. I have always wanted to run my own business and this qualification has helped me gain necessary knowledge to progress me closer to this being possible, so hopefully that is now within my reach.
