The Russell Group are a leading transport and logistics provider committed to delivering high value solutions across the UK.  We have a fantastic opportunity for someone to join the team as a General Manager at our Hillington site in Glasgow. Managing a multi customer HMRC warehouse, a multi-service operation, including contract packing. The General Manager will support the development of the company’s service offering. Providing strategic operational direction for the business unit by controlling the site’s operational and financial performance.

What does the job entail?

The General Manager will have total accountability for site performance and service delivery/development to a wide-ranging customer base. Day to day the General Manager will:

  • Be responsible for a 74-acre site and 400,000 sq. ft. warehouse and logistics operation including the planning and scheduling of warehouse demands
  • Forecasting using historical data to manage workload and resource effectively
  • Management of between 100-200 FTE dependent on seasonality, including recruitment/selection and development
  • Motivate and develop a diverse highly skilled team with clear progression paths and succession planning in mind.
  • Drive high operational standards by optimising processes and driving positive business change
  • Have full accountability for health, safety and regulatory compliance associated with the site
  • Customer relationship planning, management and delivering customer value
  • Development of performance measurement systems (KPI’s) and use them to drive improvement and manage cost
  • Engagement and communication with Group Board, on site performance and service development.
  • Management of associated budget and P&L for the site

Our Ideal Candidate

An experienced General Manager/Business Unit Manager with a strong background in warehousing operations, preferably within a 3PL environment.   You will also be familiar with United Kingdom Excise Duty Management and control systems, in particular with the Excise Duty applicable to spirit drinks and will have played a leading role in the management of Bonded warehouses. Having experience of contract packing would be advantageous.

You will be an effective operator with excellent communication skills and a strong presence. The ability to engage with stakeholders at all levels, from Operative to Director level is key. You will have a strong track record of change management and performance improvement, and this will be evidenced with examples of introducing new working practices and systems to operations, as well as influencing cultural change. It is essential that you are commercially astute. You will have a good working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite, particularly excel and similar tools, which you will use to analyse data in combination with warehousing management supporting systems.

Additional information

You will normally work 45 hours per week, Monday – Friday, although some flexibility out with these times is required as the business operates seven days per week.
