RHA’s National Lorry Week (23rd – 29th October) challenges old perceptions and celebrates the road transport industry. This year’s theme is “looking into the future” which aims to highlight the advancements in technology, sustainability, and safety across the road transport industry and the range of roles available.

We want to kick off National Lorry week by giving a big thanks to our amazing team who work to keep the world moving.

But at John G Russell, we don’t just help to keep the world moving, we get careers moving too! The road transport sector offers limitless opportunities to develop and advance your career.

Take our multi-talented colleagues Scott Johnston and Michael Grant as prime examples.

Scott joined our company as a driver more than ten years ago. Although he briefly left the company, he returned in 2019 as a distribution artic driver. Since rejoining, Scott has successfully transitioned to become a driver assessor/trainer, completing a Green Band (S.A.F.E.D) instructor course with Transport Training Academy Manchester (TTA). As a qualified driver assessor and trainer, he now conducts annual driver assessments, pre-employment assessments, post-accident assessments, and provides in-house fuel efficiency training.

Reflecting on his new role, Scott expressed, "it has been a learning opportunity for me as the company have given me the chance to attend several training courses.”

Scott’s story of skill acquisition and career progression is echoed by Michael Grant, our Transport Administrator. During his 25 years with us, Michael has worked in various departments, including traffic, HGV driving, and container control. He has taken on a wide range of responsibilities, showcasing his versatility and adaptability.

Michael attributes his long tenure to the array of opportunities he has had and the friendships he has cultivated. “The variety has kept me interested. Over the years I have worked with a lot of good colleagues, some who may buy me a drink and call me a friend" he explained.
